28. The Winning Attitude
28. The Winning Attitude
Why do some students find it so difficult to get along
with others in the school community and struggle academically, despite their
obvious potentials? The answer is in today’s message: The Winning Attitude.
"Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize
with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and
keep a humble attitude.
Don't repay evil for evil. Don't retaliate with insults
when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what
God has called you to do, and He will bless you for it." 1 Peter 3:8-9

A young mother was ready for a few minutes of
relaxation after a long and demanding day. However, her young daughter wanted
her to read her a story immediately. She asked for a moment to relax and unwind
but the child was insistent. To buy herself some time, the mother tore off a
full-page picture of the world on the back page of the magazine she was reading
into several pieces and asked her daughter to put the picture together as a condition
to reading her a story now. Imagine her surprise when the little girl announced
her quick completion of the project. The little girl simply explained,
"You see, Mommy, when I got the little girl together, the whole world came
together." The child had seen that on the reverse side of the page was the
picture of a little girl! Rather than struggle to assemble the world picture,
she simply assembled the girl picture!
It takes the right attitude to put your academic world
together. This singular factor has the potential to make your life more
productive academically and beyond.
Attitude has been defined as ‘A complex
mental state involving beliefs and feelings, and values and dispositions
to act in certain ways’. Your attitude will either shorten your journey to
academic success or stretch it unnecessarily. Even if you are a genius,
lecturers, classmates and roommates who have the authority or means will throw
roadblocks across your path if your attitude is bad. A preacher once said,
“When God talks about open doors, he’s referring to human beings.”
Today’s bible reading urges a humble attitude. Despite
the tiredness and desperate need of rest of the mother in our story, the
daughter’s great attitude made her request undeniable. Rather than throw tantrums,
she creatively solved her problem and got what she wanted. Truth is, regardless
of the situation or discomfort others may experience, a humble attitude will
always make people more disposed to do things for you and be more considerate
when you are concerned. A great attitude will open those great doors that
others cannot even find to knock on. It will bring you into the courts of
greatness that capability only dreams about.
Don’t compromise on your good habits, stay
focused on your academic goals and whatever happens know that God will come
through for you.
Continue to expect the best from yourself and continue to maintain a
great attitude regardless whatever happens.
