24. How To Be ‘Time-Smart’

24. How To Be ‘Time-Smart’

“God's kingdom is like ten young virgins who took oil lamps and went out to greet the bridegroom. Five were silly and five were smart. The silly virgins took lamps, but no extra oil. The smart virgins took jars of oil to feed their lamps.

The bridegroom didn't show up when they expected him, and they all fell asleep. "In the middle of the night someone yelled out, 'He's here! The bridegroom's here! Go out and greet him!' "The ten virgins got up and got their lamps ready. The silly virgins said to the smart ones, 'Our lamps are going out; lend us some of your oil.' "They answered, 'There might not be enough to go around; go buy your own.' "They did, but while they were out buying oil, the bridegroom arrived. When everyone who was there to greet him had gone into the wedding feast, the door was locked. "Much later, the other virgins, the silly ones, showed up and knocked on the door, saying, 'Master, we're here. Let us in.' "He answered, 'Do I know you? I don't think I know you.' "So stay alert. You have no idea when he might arrive.” Matthew 25:2-13 THE MESSAGE

Friends, welcome to Intervention!

Today, I want to share with you on How To Be ‘Time-Smart’.

Intervention is an outreach of VISION BUILDERS designed to help undergraduates contact divine intervention for academic victories. Intervention brings you inspirational messages and Study Tips to enable you be your best academically! Through this message, we believe that God is set to bless you by removing every barrier against your academic success and fulfillment.

Time has been defined as ‘A period considered as a resource under your control and sufficient to accomplish something’. It is a common denominator to all. In itself is nothing, but how you use it will create or reduce value in your academic life. As evidenced by today’s bible reading, time for a specific task will not always be available because time, once lost, can never be regained. It was John Mason who said, “As every thread of gold is valuable, so is every minute of time.” As our bible reading demonstrates, time never waits for anyone to put things in order, but ‘time-smart’ students know exactly how to squeeze the most and best juice out of each day’s available 24 hours!

There are 8 Simple Organizational Skills And Time Management Strategies of ‘Time-smart’ students:

1.    Set Goals For Your Time - Set specific study goals for each study session. Prioritize assignments, daily tasks and goals by using a daily "To Do" list. Budget time by priorities. Once you’ve completed a task, check it off your list. Evaluate how you spend your time. This can be a very eye opening activity! Convert otherwise idle times between classes, waiting for an appointment or riding on the bus into study time. Decide what you are willing to cut out of your life while you are a student.

2.    Have A Plan And Stick With A Schedule - Create your own semester schedule. On it highlight important deadlines for study, tests and assignments. Pin it up somewhere visible. Set a regular schedule for all your necessary academic activities, and stick with it.

3.    Review Class Notes - The best time for this is immediately after class while the information is still fresh. The greatest amount of forgetting happens in the first 24 hours after class.

4.    Always Start Now! Start assignments as soon as they are given.

5.    Study In Daylight Hours when you are most alert. The success secret here is ‘same place, same time, every time’.

6.    Balance Your Activities – spread your time over a variety of activities such as attending classes, eating, sleeping, recreation, homework. Focus on academics during the week and save socializing for the weekend. Make sure you do something fun every now and then to take a break from your studies!! Make time daily for God. According to Oswald Chambers, “There is no other time than now with God...”  Never so positively involved with academic work and forget the most important Person in life.

7.    Don't Cram - try to study on a regular basis, for 1 1/2 to 2 hours at a time, remaining alert and concentrating on the subject at hand.

8.    Get Together With Other Students And Study In A Group - this can give you insights and information you might have missed in your own notes.

There will always be consequences for how you use your school time. Be ‘time-smart’!

Don’t compromise on your good habits, stay focused on your academic goals and whatever happens know that God will come through for you.
Continue to expect the best from yourself and continue to maintain a great attitude regardless whatever happens.
